ぼったくり

Japanese

Etymology

Compound of ぼり (bori, overcharging, ripping off, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb ぼる (boru, to overcharge, to rip off)) + たくり (takuri, snatching, grabbing, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of verb たくる (takuru, to snatch, grab, take forcefully)).[1][2][3] This latter element might be related to verb 手繰る (taguru, to haul something in, to reel something in).[4][5][6]
