  1. (when calculating age) to attain
    当年(とうねん)とって18(じゅうはっ)(さい)
    tōnen totte jūhassai
    He attained the age of 18 this year/He became 18 this year.
  2. in the pattern of にとって, for, regarding, as far as ... is concerned
    (だれ)とって()()だ。
    Dare ni totte mo muda da.
    No good for anybody.

Etymology 2

Sound shift from とて by gemination, usually informal. Shortening of various phrases such as といって, (おも)って (tōmotte), といっても, and としても.
