From Arabic بَبِيج (babīj), which in turn is from ⲡⲓ- (pi-) + ⲉⲡⲟⲓⲕⲓⲟⲛ (epoikion), which in turn is from Ancient Greek ἐποίκιον (epoíkion, “village, farmstead”).
