ὄρτυξ

Ancient Greek

Etymology

Presumably from Proto-Indo-European *wort-, whence also Sanskrit वर्तिका (vártikā), वर्तक (vartaka), but this does not account for the alternation of the ending -ῠγος (-ugos) ~ -ῠκος (-ukos), which Beekes considers characteristically Pre-Greek.
