ἄσβολος
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ἀσβόλη (asbólē)
Etymology
Furnée suggests a Pre-Greek origin, in view of the rare cluster "-σβ-" and the variant σποδός (spodós, “ashes”). According to Beekes, the word is also connected with ψόλος (psólos, “soot, smoke”) and σπολεύς (spoleús, “loaf of bread”). Compare also ἄσφαλτος (ásphaltos, “bitumen, asphalt”).
