Etymology
From ἄρχ(ω) (árkh(ō), “I begin”) + suffix -μα (-ma) in the plural -ματα with *ἀρχ-μα > *ἀργ-μα, of which this form is the plural.
*ἄρχματα (*árkhmata) is found in ἀπάρχματα θεοῖς (apárkhmata theoîs, “sacrifices for the gods”) at Hesychius.
