Etymology
Compound from Ancient Greek ἄκανθος (ákanthos, “acanthus, a prickly plant”) + χοῖρος (khoîros, “pig”). Displaced ὕστριξ (hústrix, “porcupine, bristles, torture instrument”). Secondary sense of hedgehog displaced ἐχῖνος (ekhînos, “hedgehog, etc.”).
