Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps from ἀ- (a-, not) + δεῦκος (deûkos, sweetness), thus "not sweet, bitter, cruel." Or possibly from ἀ- (a-, not) + δεύκει (deúkei, he considers, ponders), thus "unexpected" or "careless."
