ἀΐσσω

Ancient Greek

Alternative forms

  • ᾄσσω (ā́issō)
  • ᾄττω (ā́ittō), ἄττω (áttō) Attic

Etymology

Uncertain. Perhaps cognate with Sanskrit वेविज (vevija, quick), यात् (yāt, moving), वेविज्यते (vevijyate, to flee from), though Beekes calls this "formally impossible" because of the long -ī-. Possibly instead related to αἰόλος (aiólos, swift, nimble, quick).
