ἀΐσσω
Ancient Greek
Alternative forms
- ᾄσσω (ā́issō)
- ᾄττω (ā́ittō), ἄττω (áttō) — Attic
Etymology
Uncertain. Perhaps cognate with Sanskrit वेविज (vevija, “quick”), यात् (yāt, “moving”), वेविज्यते (vevijyate, “to flee from”), though Beekes calls this "formally impossible" because of the long -ī-. Possibly instead related to αἰόλος (aiólos, “swift, nimble, quick”).
Pronunciation
- (5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /aː.ís.sɔː/
- (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /aˈis.so/
- (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /aˈis.so/
- (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /aˈis.so/
- (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /aˈi.so/
