From Proto-Tai *wuːᴬ (“to float”), from Middle Chinese 浮 (MC bjuw, “to float”). Cognate with Thai ฟู (fuu), Northern Thai ᨼᩪ, Khün ᨼᩪ, Isan ฟู, Lao ຟູ (fū), Tai Dam ꪡꪴ, Tai Dón ꪡꪴ, Shan ၽူး (phúu) or ၾူး (fúu), Ahom 𑜇𑜥 (phū), Zhuang fouz, Bouyei fux.
