From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰaːꟲ¹, from Old Chinese 布 (OC *paːs, “cloth”). Cognate with Thai ผ้า (pâa), Northern Thai ᨹ᩶ᩣ, Lao ຜ້າ (phā), Tai Dam ꪠ꫁ꪱ, Shan ၽႃႈ (phāa), Tai Nüa ᥚᥣᥲ (phàa), Aiton ၸႃ (phā), Ahom 𑜇𑜠 (pha), 𑜇𑜡 (phā), 𑜇𑜨𑜠 (phoa), or 𑜇𑜨𑜡 (phoā).
