From Proto-Tai *ʔaːnᴮ (“to recite”). Cognate with Thai อ่าน (àan), Northern Thai ᩋ᩵ᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ອ່ານ (ʼān), Tai Dam ꪮ꪿ꪱꪙ, Shan ဢၢၼ်ႇ (ʼàan), Ahom 𑜒𑜃𑜫 (ʼan), Tày án. Compare Khmer អាន (ʼaan).
