From Proto-Tai *krajᴬ (“jug”). Cognate with Thai ไห (hǎi, “jug; steamer”), Lao ໄຫ (hai), Lü ᦺᦠ (ḣay, “jug; steamer”), Shan ႁႆ (hǎi, “steamer”), Saek ไห่, Zuojiang Zhuang haej.
