From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰwɛːnᴬ¹ (“ring; bangle”). Cognate with Thai แหวน (wɛ̌ɛn), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᩅᩯᨶ, Lao ແຫວນ (wǣn), Lü ᦶᦛᧃ (v̇aen), Tai Dam ꪵꪪꪙ, Shan ဝႅၼ် (wěn), Ahom 𑜈𑜢𑜐𑜫 (biñ). Compare Middle Chinese 環 (MC ɦˠuan).
