From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ʰwɛːnᴬ¹ (ring; bangle). Cognate with Thai แหวน (wɛ̌ɛn), Northern Thai ᩉ᩠ᩅᩯᨶ, Lao ແຫວນ (wǣn), ᦶᦛᧃ (v̇aen), Tai Dam ꪵꪪꪙ, Shan ဝႅၼ် (wěn), Ahom 𑜈𑜢𑜐𑜫 (biñ). Compare Middle Chinese (MC ɦˠuan).
