Etymology

Possibly the continuation of a dialectal form whose original pronunciation could have been *[añcün]. Cognate with Jurchen ancu (gold), whence Manchu ᠠᠨᠴᡠᠨ (ancun, earring). Compare Proto-Turkic *altun (gold), Mongolian ᠠᠯᠲᠠᠨ (altan, gold).
