Inherited from Middle Khmer *សេយ្យ (*seyya), សយ្យ (sayya, “excellent”) (first attested in 1579 as sayya), from Pali seyya (“better; excellent”). Compare Sanskrit श्रेयस् (śreyas). Cognate with Thai ไสย (sǎi).
