Etymology
From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ទន្លេ ~ ទន្លេយ (danle ~ danley, “large body of water”), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d(n)liʔ (“large river, sea”).
Cognate with Chong tʰəleː, Phong-Kniang sleː and possibly Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] kamalē (“sea”). Also cognate with non-Austroasiatic Thai ทะเล (tá-lee).
