Etymology

From Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer ទន្លេ ~ ទន្លេយ (danle ~ danley, large body of water), from Proto-Mon-Khmer *d(n)liʔ (large river, sea).

Cognate with Chong tʰəleː, Phong-Kniang sleː and possibly Central Nicobarese [Nancowry] kamalē (sea). Also cognate with non-Austroasiatic Thai ทะเล (tá-lee).
