From earlier ᚠᚨᛁᚺᛁᛞᛟ (faihido /⁠faihidō⁠/), from Proto-Germanic *faihidǭ, first-person singular past indicative of *faihijaną (“to paint”). The development of aih to āh brings the word one step closer to the Old Icelandic fáða.
