From Proto-Inuit *ạʁna- from Proto-Eskimo *aʁna-. Cognate of Greenlandic arnaq, Inupiaq aġnaq and Nunatsiavummiutut annak. Possibly attested as early as 1577 in the name Egnock or Ignorth.
