Etymology

From Old Georgian ჴურელი (qureli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *qwr-el- (hole, slit), a derivative of Proto-Kartvelian *qwer- ~ *qwr- (to make holes) (cf. ხვრეტს (xvreṭs)) with the *-el suffix. Cognate with Mingrelian ხურუ (xuru, ravine).
