ჭიამაია

Georgian

Etymology

Related to ჭია (č̣ia), as it also covers bugs. Compare აბანოს ჭია (abanos č̣ia, cockroach).

Perhaps from ჭია (č̣ia, worm, (bug)) + მაია (maia, A female given name), which explains the fact that the final (a) does not truncate in the singular declension. Some languages also use female given names for ladybugs. Compare Galician xoaniña (literally little Xoana).
