From Middle Georgian წამი (c̣ami), from Old Georgian წამი (c̣ami, minute; moment); see there for more. For the meaning shift, compare Old Armenian վայրկեան (vayrkean, minute) and Eastern Armenian վայրկյան (vayrkyan).

The original meaning is partially retained in the Mingrelian cognate წუმი (c̣umi).
