From ჩან- (çan-) + -ს (-s). Inherited from Proto-Kartvelian *c₁en- : c₁n- (“to grow, flourish (about plants)”). Cognate with Georgian მცენარე (mcenare), Mingrelian ჩანაფა (čanapa) and Svan ლიშნე (lišne).
