From Old Georgian მტუერი (mṭueri, dust), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *mṭwer-. Most probably related to ამტვრევს (amṭvrevs, to crush). Cognates include Mingrelian ტვერი (ṭveri), ნტვერი (nṭveri) and Laz მტვერი (mťveri), მტვეი (mťvei).
