Etymology
From *კვილ-ა (*ḳvil-a), from Proto-Kartvelian *ḳwil-.[1][2] Cognate with Laz კული (ǩuli, “chair”), Svan კუ̂ილ (ḳûil, “block of wood, tree stump; stool”), and possibly dialectal Georgian კვილო (ḳvilo, “small block of wood, tree stump”).
According to Klimov, from a Northeast Caucasian source.[3] Compare Tsez къуӏри (q’uʿri, “bench”), Hinukh къуре (q’ure), Dargwa уркьули (urq̇uli, “board”), for which Starostin-Nikolayev reconstructs Proto-Northeast Caucasian *q̇wǝ̆lʔă.[4]
