იარლიყი

Georgian

Etymology

Attested in Middle Georgian in the form იერლაყი (ierlaq̇i).[1] Of Turkic-Mongolic origin, likely Middle Mongol ᠵᠠᠷᠯᠢᠭ (ǰarlig), 札兒里黑 (jarlih), entering the Georgian language after the Mongol conquest in the 13th century.

In its modern form, the word may have been influenced by, if not entirely re-borrowed from, Azerbaijani yarlıq or Turkish yarlık. Notably, the word appears to be absent from Orbeliani's dictionary (ca. 1700).

Compare also the modern Mongolian зарлиг (zarlig), ᠵᠠᠷᠯᠢᠭ (ǰarlig). Sense 2 appears to be a semantic loan from Russian ярлы́к (jarlýk).
