Ultimately from Latin patrōnus, likely via Mingrelian პატონი (ṗaṭoni), which initiated the deletion of "r" sound. From the same root as Georgian პატრონი (ṗaṭroni), which is relatively unchanged. See also the etymological pleonasm Georgian ბატონ-პატრონი (baṭon-ṗaṭroni).

Unlike English, when used as a term of address, ბატონი is usually followed by the name of the person in question, not the surname. Constructions with surnames do occur and are accepted, but they are found in more specific contexts.
