From Proto-Southwestern Tai *sɛːnᴬ¹ (“one hundred thousand”) (Jonsson, 1991). Cognate with Thai แสน (sɛ̌ɛn), Northern Thai ᩈᩯ᩠ᨶ, Lao ແສນ (sǣn), Lü ᦶᦉᧃ (ṡaen), Tai Nüa ᥔᥦᥢᥴ (sáen), Phake ꩬိၺ် (siñ), Ahom 𑜏𑜢𑜐𑜫 (siñ).
