From Middle Chinese 話 (MC hwaejH). Cognate with Thai ว่า (wâa), Lao ວ່າ (wā), Northern Thai ᩅ᩵ᩤ, Khün ᩅ᩵ᩤ, Lü ᦞᦱᧈ (vaa¹), Tai Dam ꪫ꪿ꪱ, and Zhuang vah.
