From Proto-Tai *luŋᴬ (parent's older brother). Cognate with Thai ลุง (lung), Lao ລຸງ (lung), Shan လုင်း (lúng), Tai Nüa ᥘᥧᥒᥰ (lüng), Zhuang lungz, Nong Zhuang lungz, Saek ลุ๊ง.
