From Proto-Sino-Tibetan *s-r(j)a-j/s/t. Cognate with Tibetan བཞད (bzhad, “to laugh, smile”), Nuosu ꒉ (yy, “to laugh, smile”), and Lisu ꓪꓽ ꓫꓱꓻ (wɑ̀ ʃø, “to laugh”).
