From Proto-Karen *jowᴮ (“mouse; rat”), from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *b-jəw-n ~ bwəj (“rat; rabbit; hare”). Cognate with Western Pwo ယူ, Pa'o Karen ယူး. Compare Western Kayah ꤐꤟꤌꤣ (zṳeoe).
