Etymology

From Bengali বাঙ্গালী (baṅgalī), which is from Middle Bengali বাঙ্গালা (baṅgala, Bengal), ultimately derived from Sanskrit বঙ্গ (vaṅga) + Bengali আল (al, mound) + the Bengali adjectival suffix (-i). Compare Arabic بَنْغَالِيّ (banḡāliyy), Persian بنگالی (bangâli), Hindi बंगाली (baṅgālī).
