Inherited from Old Burmese ခ္လ (kla).[1] Derived from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(k/g)la-k/y/t (“to fall”). Cognate with Mizo tla ~ tlâk (“to fall”) and Chinese 下 (xià, “lower; under; to go down”). Causative of ကျ (kya.).
