Inherited from Old Burmese ခ္လ (kla).[1] Derived from Proto-Sino-Tibetan *(k/g)la-k/y/t (to fall). Cognate with Mizo tla ~ tlâk (to fall) and Chinese (xià, lower; under; to go down). Causative of ကျ (kya.).
