From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pʰawᴬ¹ (“to burn (tr.)”), Proto-Tai *prawᴬ (“to burn (tr.)”). Compare Middle Chinese 炮 (MC baew, “to roast; to burn”). Cognate with Thai เผา (pǎo), Lü ᦕᧁ (ṗhaw), Tai Dam ꪹꪠꪱ, Shan ၽဝ် (phǎo), Tai Nüa ᥚᥝᥴ (pháw), Ahom 𑜇𑜧 (phaw), Zhuang byaeu.
