Borrowed from Sanskrit सङ्क्रान्ति (saṅkrānti, “the passage of the Sun from one position (Aries) to another (Taurus)”). Compare Lü ᦉᧂᦃᦱᧃ (ṡangẋaan) and Thai สงกรานต์ (sǒng-graan). Doublet of ສົງການ (song kān).
