Etymology
From Old Khmer ក្រោង៑ (kroṅ), ក្រង៑ (kraṅ, “high; huge”). Cognate with Modern Khmer គ្រោង (kroong), Lao ໂຄ່ງ (khōng). Compare Ahom 𑜁𑜤𑜂𑜫 (khuṅ).
Jonsson (1991) suggested it was from Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɡrɔŋᴮ⁴ (“big”) but most of SWT languages do not have words for it.
