Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩯ, Khün ᨻᩯ, Lao ແພ (phǣ), Lü ᦶᦗ (pae), Shan ပႄး (páae), Tai Nüa ᥙᥥᥰ (pë), Phake ပေ (pe), Ahom 𑜆𑜦𑜧 (pē), Old Khmer bē (“banana-leaf platter on which offerings are presented”), Modern Khmer ផែ (phae). Compare Middle Chinese 排 (MC beaj), Proto-Hlai *ɓəj (“bamboo raft”).
