Alteration of เวียร, from Sanskrit वीर्य (vīrya, “heroism, prowess, valour; vigour, strength; virility; energy, firmness; power, potency; etc.”) or Pali viriya (“vigour; energy; effort; exertion”). Cognate with Khmer វីរិយ (viiriyĕəʼ), Lao ພຽນ (phīan).
