From corruption of มัญจา (bed), from Pali mañca (bed; couch; sofa), and perhaps influenced by เบญจ (five), corrupted form of ปัญจ (five), from Pali pañca (five). Compare Khmer បញ្ច (bɑñcɑɑ, decorated stand supporting a box containing the ashes of a deceased person).
