Etymology

From เชียง (chiiang, “city”, especially one walled or fortified) +‎ ราย (raai, referring to King Mang Rai); literally “Rai('s) City”; after King Mang Rai (1239–1317 CE), who founded in the city in 1805 BE (1262/63 CE); coined and given to the city in that year.[1]
