Etymology

From เงาะ (ngɔ́, “rambutan”) +‎ โรงเรียน (roong-riian, “school”); literally "school rambutan"; after Na San School (โรงเรียนนาสาร) in Ban Na San District, Surat Thani Province, Thailand, where the fruit was first cultivated in the country around 1926 and was first distributed to the public in 1956; first attested around 1957–58.[1]
