From Proto-Tai *ʰlaːnᴬ (“nephew; niece; grandchild”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩉᩖᩣ᩠ᨶ, Khün ᩉᩖᩣ᩠ᨶ, Lao ຫຼານ (lān), Lü ᦜᦱᧃ (l̇aan), Tai Dam ꪨꪱꪙ, Shan လၢၼ် (lǎan), Tai Nüa ᥘᥣᥢᥴ (láan), Ahom 𑜎𑜃𑜫 (lan), Zhuang lan, Saek หล่าน. Compare Sui haanl (“grandson”).
