From Proto-Tai *ʰŋwuːkᴰ (“grey-haired”). Cognate with Lao ຫງອກ (ngǭk), Shan ႁွၵ်ႇ (hàuk), Ahom 𑜀𑜨𑜀𑜫 (kok). Compare Proto-Hlai *hŋuːk (“white hair”).
