Etymology

From Mon သပ္ပရိုဟ် (“good man”),[1][2] corrupted from သပ္ပုရိဟ်, from Pali sappurisa (“good man”).[2]

Duke Anumanratchathon (Yong Sathiankoset)[3] presumed that it was probably from Old Khmer សប្បរុស (sapparusa), °សប្បរស (°sapparasa), សប្បរស្ស (sapparassa, “good man; moral man; wise man; worthy man; etc”), which were hybrids of Pali sappurisa (“righteous man; true man; etc”) and Sanskrit सत्पुरुष (satpuruṣa, “good man; wise man; etc”) and correspond to Modern Khmer សប្បុរស (sâbbŏrsâ).
