From Sanskrit सरीसृप (sarīsṛpa, “crawling, creeping; creeping animal; snake”); perhaps via Old Khmer sarisṛp (“crawling or creeping thing: worm, snake, reptile”). Cognate with Modern Khmer សរីស្រឹប (sɑɑriihrɨp). Compare Pali siriṅsapa.
