From ลอย (lɔɔi, “to raise; to lift”) + นวล (nuuan, “yellowish white”, referring to a face on which a traditional yellowish-white face powder, called แป้งนวล (bpɛ̂ɛng-nuuan), has been applied); originated from an act of keeping one's chin up whilst walking.
