From Proto-Tai *ɲuŋᴬ (“mosquito”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨿᩩᨦ (nyung), Lao ຍຸງ (nyung), Lü ᦍᦳᧂ (yung), Shan ယုင်း (yúng), Tai Nüa ᥕᥧᥒᥰ (yüng), Aiton ယုင် (yuṅ), Ahom 𑜐𑜤𑜂𑜫 (ñuṅ), Zhuang nyungz, Nong Zhuang nyongz, Saek ญุ๊ง. Compare Proto-Hlai *C-ɲuːŋ (“mosquito”) (from Pre-Hlai *C-ɲuːŋ).
