From Proto-Southwestern Tai *vaːtᴰ (to beat; to whip). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨼᩣ᩠ᨯ, Lao ຟາດ (fāt), Khün ᨼᩣ᩠ᨯ, ᦝᦱᧆ (faad), Ahom 𑜇𑜄𑜫 (phat). Possibly related to Proto-Southwestern Tai *vatᴰ (whence Thai ฟัด (fát)).
