From Proto-Tai *ɟm̩.rukᴰ (“tomorrow”) which /-k/ becomes /-ŋ/ due to assimilation with นี้ ("this"). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩕᩪᨠ or ᨽᩪᨠ, Lao ພຸກ (phuk) (in ພຸກນີ້ (phuk nī)), Lü ᦘᦳᧅ (phuk), Shan ၽုၵ်ႈ (phūk), Zhuang byug (in ngoenzbyug).
